Home sweet home

Ik ben weer terug.... in Nederland. Was totaal niet gepland, maar dat is niets natuurlijk in deze tijd. Het plan was om in juni terug te komen voor vakantie, maar de hele coronavirus heeft helaas alles omgegooid.

Ik zat de laatste paar maand in Kaapstad, Zuid Afrika. Na mijn laatste blog vanuit Zanzibar ben ik in December weer naar Livingstone gegaan en heb daar(naast werken natuurlijk) kerst en oud en nieuw gevierd. Was super om iedereen daar weer te zien en om met mijn oude vrienden daar het nieuwe jaar in te gaan. Terug naar Livingstone gaan voelde ook echt weer als thuiskomen.

Vanaf de tweede week in januari was ik aan het werk op de projecten in Kaapstad. Het huis was in Muizenberg op ongeveer 40 minuten rijden van het centrum en 30 minuten rijden van de town ships waar we werkten. Hier hebben we de sport, onderwijs en girl empowerment projecten. En ook deze locatie en projecten zijn erg uniek, net als St. Lucia, Moshi, Zanzibar en Livingstone. We woonden dicht bij het strand en de tafelberg kon je in de verte zien, erg mooi.

Mijn laatste maand stond in het teken van het corona virus. Helaas was de corona ook in Zuid Afrika uitgebroken en toen werd er besloten om het land in lockdown te gooien. Een erg strenge maatregel maar gelukkig is de kans op een grote uitbraak nu wel veel minder groot. Ook andere landen waar African Impact werkt hebben het land in complete lockdown gegooid waardoor wij voorlopig geen projecten kunnen doen. Begrijpelijk maar het is ook erg zonde. Doordat wij niet meer niet meer over straat konden en het vliegveld dicht was zaten ik met 3 anderen bij 2 week ‘vast’ in het vrijwilligershuis. En ondanks dat dit een hele gekke situatie was hebben wij ons toch prima vermaakt en heb me altijd veilig gevoeld.

Had mij ingeschreven voor Bijzondere Bijstand Buitenland waarbij KLM en andere instanties probeert om Nederlanders die in het buitenland vastzitten terug te halen. Gelukkig is dit ook voor veel mensen in Zuid Afrika gebeurd. Op maandag kreeg ik het berichtje dat ik op woensdag zou vliegen, 24 uur later was ik weer thuis. Ben heel erg blij dat ik nu weer thuis ben bij pap en mam maar toch voelt het allemaal erg dubbel. Ik zou nu nog gewoon in Zuid Afrika moeten zitten en daar op project moeten gaan wat o zo belangrijk is. Helaas moeten we dat voorlopig uitstellen. Maar zodra het corona virus ‘voorbij’ is ga ik terug om de boel mee te helpen om op te starten en weer het belangrijke werk te doen wat we altijd deden.

Voorlopig dus 2 week in quarentine zitten thuis en dan zien we wel weer.


Home sweet home

I’m back home... back in The Netherlands. This wasn’t planned at all, but that’s nothing in this time. The plan was to come back in June for a holiday, but this corona virus totally changed the plans.

The last couple of months I was in Cape Town, South Africa. After my last blog from Zanzibar I went to Livingstone in December to (besides working) celebrate Christmas and New Year. It was awesome to see everyone and to celebrate New Year with my friends there. Going back to Livingstone felt like going home.

From the second week of January I was based in Cape Town. Our home was in Muizenberg, a 40-minute drive from the city and 30-minute drive from the townships where we worked. We have sport, teaching and gender empowerment projects. This location is very unique, same as all the other project that we got in St. Lucia, Moshi, Zanzibar and Livingstone. We live close by the beach and from a distance you could see Table Mountain.

My last month was all about the coronavirus. Unfortunately, the virus broke out in South Africa, shortly after that happened the government decided the put the country in lockdown to stop further spread of the virus. Other countries where African Impact has projects closed their border as well which means we can’t do any projects until further notice. Even though I understand, it does makes me very sad. Because of the lockdown the airport was closed and we weren’t allowed to go walk on the street anymore. I was ‘stuck’ in the volunteer house with 3 other people and even though it was a very weird situation, we still managed to have a good time and felt safe at all times.

I signed myself up for a Dutch organization that tried to get all Dutchies stuck in another country back home. Lucky this also happened for the people in South Africa. On Monday I got a message that I would be flying on Wednesday, 24 hours later I was back home. I’m very happy that I’m home with my family but everything feels very double. I should still be in South Africa and still work on projects which is very important for all the people there. Unfortunately, we need postpone all work for now. But when this coronavirus is over, I will go back and help start up the project so we can continue with all the important projects that we are doing.

For now I need to stay 2 weeks in quarantine and stay safe. Let’s see what the future brings.
